Clay is normally chosen for its permanent fired colour, natural variation, traditional character and long service life rather than simply because it is the lowest-cost option.

Are Clay Pavers Stronger Than Concrete Pavers?

Good-quality clay pavers are extremely durable, but it is too simplistic to say that every clay paver is stronger than every concrete paver. The correct comparison depends on the individual product, thickness, manufacturing quality and intended loading.

In practice, a correctly specified clay paver performs very well under normal UK patio, path and driveway use. Just as importantly, long-term performance depends on the complete pavement construction. A strong paver laid on a weak sub-base or poorly restrained edge can still move or fail.

Can You Use Clay Pavers for a Driveway?

Yes, clay pavers can be used for driveways where the particular product is suitable for vehicle loading and the base is constructed correctly. The strength of the finished driveway comes from the whole paving system, not from the paver alone.

What Do You Lay Clay Pavers On?

For a typical flexible UK installation, clay pavers are laid on a uniform bed of well-graded sharp sand over a properly compacted sub-base, usually MOT Type 1 or an equivalent suitable material.

The sub-base provides the structural support, while the bedding layer allows the pavers to be levelled accurately. Strong edge restraints are also essential because they prevent the paving from spreading under traffic and compaction. The required construction depth should be increased where ground conditions are poor or vehicle loading is expected.

Do You Grout Clay Pavers?

Traditional flexible clay paving is normally jointed with suitable dry jointing sand rather than conventional cement grout. The sand is brushed into the narrow joints and compacted so that the individual pavers lock together as a pavement.

This is different from rigid slab paving. Clay brick paving works as an interlocking system, so the joints, edge restraints, bedding and compaction all contribute to performance. If the pavers are being installed using a specialist rigid system, the jointing method should follow that system rather than a standard flexible-paving specification.

Do Clay Pavers Need to Be Sealed?

No. Good-quality clay pavers do not normally need sealing in order to perform outdoors. Their colour is created through firing and is part of the clay itself, so sealing is not required simply to stop the colour from fading.

In our view, clay paving is usually best allowed to weather naturally. A compatible breathable sealer can be considered where additional stain resistance or a particular finish is wanted, but it should be treated as optional rather than as a routine requirement.

How Long Do Clay Pavers Last?

Properly specified and correctly installed clay pavers can provide a very long service life, often measured in several decades. Their durability comes from the fired clay body, strong resistance to surface wear and the fact that the colour is not simply applied as a surface coating.

In practice, service life depends just as much on the installation as on the paver itself. A well-compacted sub-base, stable bedding layer, good edge restraint and correctly filled joints are essential if the paving is expected to remain level and perform properly over the long term.

How Do You Install Clay Pavers?

Clay pavers are normally installed as a complete flexible paving system rather than simply placed directly onto the ground. For a typical UK installation, the process includes preparing and compacting the sub-base, installing secure edge restraints, laying a uniform sharp-sand bedding course, setting out straight guideline strings, laying the pavers to the chosen pattern, compacting the surface and filling the joints with suitable jointing sand.

Good setting-out is particularly important with slim clay pavers because small alignment errors can become very noticeable across a large area. Straight lines, consistent levels and firm edge restraint are therefore just as important as the pavers themselves.

Do Clay Pavers Fade Over Time?

Clay pavers do not normally fade in the same way as concrete products that rely on surface pigments or coatings. Their colour develops through the natural clay body and high-temperature firing process, so the colour remains part of the material itself.

Like all outdoor paving, the appearance can still change slightly through weathering, surface dirt, algae or natural patina. When wet, clay pavers may also appear darker and richer in tone, returning closer to their normal appearance as they dry. This is a normal characteristic of fired clay rather than colour failure.

What Is the Best Laying Pattern for Clay Pavers?

The best laying pattern depends on where the clay pavers are being used and the appearance you want to achieve. Stretcher bond gives a simple traditional look, basket weave creates a more decorative period-style finish, while herringbone provides the strongest interlock for areas exposed to vehicle movement.
