For outdoor use, a textured finish such as flamed or bush-hammered granite should be selected and installed over a correctly prepared base with effective drainage.

The main disadvantages of granite paving slabs are their weight, hardness and the additional effort required for cutting and installation. Granite normally requires suitable lifting methods, diamond cutting equipment and careful bedding because the slabs are dense and relatively unforgiving of poor installation. Granite paving may also cost more than basic concrete or some sandstone paving, while polished or very smooth finishes are unsuitable for most outdoor areas because they can become slippery when wet.

Granite paving is not inherently slippery, but its slip resistance depends heavily on the surface finish. Polished and smooth honed granite can become slippery when wet, whereas flamed, bush-hammered and other textured finishes provide substantially better grip and are normally specified for patios, paths and steps. Algae, moss, leaves, surface contamination and poor drainage can still reduce slip resistance, so routine cleaning and effective drainage remain important.

Granite paving does not normally require sealing because granite is a dense natural stone with relatively low water absorption and good resistance to everyday weathering. A compatible penetrating stone sealer can nevertheless be used where additional resistance to oil, food, grease or other staining is required, particularly around outdoor kitchens and dining areas. Any sealer should first be tested on a spare slab or inconspicuous area because some treatments can alter the colour or surface appearance.

Correctly specified and installed granite paving can remain serviceable for many decades. Granite has very high compressive strength, excellent abrasion resistance, low water absorption and strong resistance to frost and weathering, which is why it is also widely used for streets, public spaces, steps and commercial landscapes. In domestic installations, the sub-base, mortar bed, jointing, drainage and expected loading usually have a greater influence on service life than normal surface wear of the granite itself.

Granite paving prices vary according to colour, surface finish, slab size, thickness, origin and pack quantity, so the current product price provides the most accurate material cost. A complete installed patio will also include excavation, sub-base preparation, drainage, bedding mortar, slurry primer, jointing, cutting and labour, with difficult access, extensive groundwork and complex laying patterns increasing the overall installation cost.

Granite paving slabs around 20 mm thick are commonly used for residential patios, paths and other pedestrian areas when fully supported on a suitable mortar bed. Vehicle areas and heavier-duty applications may require thicker granite paving slabs, commonly around 30–50 mm, or smaller-format granite setts. The correct thickness depends on the slab dimensions, base construction, bedding system and expected loading rather than thickness alone.

Yes. Granite paving can be used for driveways when the stone format, thickness and complete pavement construction are designed for vehicle loading. Granite setts and suitably specified thicker granite paving slabs are generally more appropriate than large-format slabs intended only for pedestrian patios. Driveway performance depends on the sub-base, bedding system, edge restraint, jointing, drainage, slab dimensions and expected vehicle loads.

Yes. Granite paving is relatively low maintenance because its dense structure, low water absorption and high abrasion resistance help it withstand normal outdoor use and weathering. Routine maintenance usually consists of sweeping, removing organic debris and occasional washing with water or a suitable mild stone cleaner. Moss, algae, soil and leaves should not be allowed to accumulate, particularly in shaded or poorly drained areas, and unsuitable acidic or aggressive cleaners should be avoided.
