Porcelain planks and porcelain setts should not be assumed to be from the same production batch as the matching 900 × 600 mm or 600 × 600 mm paving slabs. These edging and decorative accessory pieces are generally intended for borders, perimeter detailing or other decorative applications rather than exact colour matching. Even where the product name or colour description is the same, the planks, setts and standard paving slabs may come from different production runs, so variations in shade, tone and surface appearance should be expected.
For a typical UK pedestrian patio, porcelain paving should normally be installed over approximately 100 mm of well-compacted MOT Type 1, followed by a full mortar bed around 30–40 mm thick. A suitable slurry primer should be applied across the complete underside of every slab before laying, with consistent external joints of around 5 mm and suitable drainage falls. Twenty-millimetre porcelain paving should be cut using a porcelain-rated diamond blade with a suitable water-cooled cutting system.
